Underrated Caribbean Islands

Ask someone to name their favorite Caribbean islands, and more than likely, you get answers along the lines of Jamaica, Barbados, The Bahamas, and Saint Lucia. Don’t get me wrong, these are all breathtakingly beautiful islands.

However, here are a few underrated gems in the Caribbean that don’t often get the love they deserve:

Canouan

Canouan is a small island in the Caribbean archipelago nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In its hilly interior, towering Mount Royal offers panoramic views from its summit. The island is known for its beaches, including Grand Bay Beach near the main town of Charlestown. South Glossy Bay has calm waters and views of the southern Grenadines. The beach at Windward Bay is dotted with volcanic rocks.

Carriacou

Carriacou is a Caribbean island belonging to Grenada. It’s known for its coral reefs and clear shallow waters. Sandy beaches include horseshoe-shaped Tyrell Bay Beach, with a yacht harbor. Boats built using traditional methods developed in the 1800s dot the shores. Housed in an old cotton mill, Carriacou Museum features exhibits illuminating the island’s African, French and British history.

Anegada

Anegada is one of the British Virgin Islands, part of a volcanic archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. A low-lying coral island, it’s known for secluded beaches like Loblolly Bay and Cow Wreck Beach. Waterside restaurants feature Anegada lobster. The island is home to flamingos, rock iguanas and rare plant species like sea lavender. Offshore, Horseshoe Reef is rich in marine life and dotted with shipwrecks.

Isla Saona

Saona Island lies off the southeastern tip of the Dominican Republic. Part of the East National Park, it's known for mangroves and coral reefs and palm-fringed beaches like Palmilla Beach. The island’s shallow waters are home to starfish. Mano Juan is a laid-back fishing village near Flamingo Lagoon, with colorful shacks and a turtle sanctuary. To the west, the Cave of Cotubanamá has pre-Columbian rock art.
